Engagement Session Attire – A Guide On What To Wear

Dec 4, 2018 | Engagement

You’re engaged! Such an exciting time for you and your fiancé to plan your wedding now! You’ll soon have an engagement session and you’ll need to pick out what you two will wear. Not sure what to wear for your engagement session? Check out some tips I’ve created to help you not only look your best but feel your best for your session!

Engagement Sessions are great to do because it gives an opportunity for you to not only get comfortable in front of the camera, but also to get a feel for how your photographer works. For me, I love to make people laugh.  If I can get that out of my couples, I know they will be more at ease during their session and actually have fun! My over all goal for my couples is to relax, have fun, and experience (unstructured) moments that they relive every time they look at those images.

I’d highly recommend that when you think you’ve got your clothes all set, snap a pic and send it to your photographer for one last look before finalizing your session wardrobe

Recommended stores for wardrobe: LULUS, Show Me Your Mu Mu, ASOS, Baltic Born, and Joyfolie

Time & Location

Sunlight and sun flares are my favorite things to play with, especially at that buttery, golden light about one to one and a half hours before the sun sets. That’s the time frame where magical goodness happens at your session. I have also found that the location will help determine what kind of wardrobe you should be in. So start with either your outfit first or location first and go from there.

Be real and comfortable

It’s very important that you feel good and comfortable in your outfit for your session. Nothing’s worse that constantly tugging at your dress to make sure it’s not too revealing. I like to shoot in all angles, especially from above, so please keep in mind low cut tops and how more revealing that may be when I shoot from above you both. Also Double Sided Tape is your BFF for those dresses and tops that sometimes shows something you don’t want showing.

Compliment each other

Meaning, plan for complimenting outfits instead of matchy-matchy. Instead of both wearing the same colors, you could both wear different colors that still go really well together, such as light blue and peach. This is your opportunity to get dressed up, so take full advantage of it and get fancy!

Colors

Pastels and neutral colors work the best in my opinion for the bright and airy look that I curate. Every photographer’s preference is different to be sure to check in with your photographer for recommendations based on their editing style.

Simple prints/patterns

  • One simple patterned item of clothing can give enough character to the outfit. Too much mixed prints can be distracting and take away from the feel of the image. I would also recommend avoid small, busy patterns. Ex: If one of you is going to wear a plaid shirt for example then the other person should be wearing a solid shirt or top.

Let it flow

You can never go wrong with a classy, elegant and timeless look. What’s more, flowing dresses make for absolutely amazing photos, the way they move around in the wind and let you play with them during the shoot.

Seasons matter

Depending on the season also depends on what you will wear. You wont want to wear shorts and a sleeveless top during the fall, or a sweater in the spring. So keep that in mind when your setting up your engagement session and deciding what to wear.

Pamper yourself

It’s ALWAYS a great idea for you to do a pre-trial run with your hair and makeup for your engagement photos. That way you know what to expect for the day of your wedding for hair and makeup AND you look AAAAmazing for your engagement photos! Also keep in mind, it’s a must to do ring shots so make sure your nails done!

And of course don’t forget to relax and have fun! And don’t get nervous!

You may be nervous at first, but if you are with a really good photographer, they will know how to ease into the session and get you and your fiance more comfortable. Once that’s happened, just let loose, flirt a lot with your LOVE, have fun, and laugh a lot! Consider your photographer as a third wheel to a very fun date evening with your fiance 🙂

If you haven’t found a photographer for your wedding, I’d love to be considered. Hop on over to my contact page and send me an email to get things started. Can’t wait to hear your plans!
